The Data Expert role encompasses a set of specialized profiles responsible for managing, processing, analyzing, and governing data across its full lifecycle. Depending on specialization (Data Engineer, Data Scientist, Data Assistant, or Data Handler), the role contributes to building scalable data infrastructure, generating insights, ensuring data quality and compliance, and enabling efficient and secure data operations.
This role requires close collaboration with cross-functional teams including scientists, developers, and engineers, supporting data-driven decision-making and enabling high-quality data usage aligned with FAIR principles and modern data architectures.

Responsibilities:

1. Data Engineering

• Design, develop, test, and maintain data architectures, including databases, data platforms, and large-scale data processing systems
• Build and optimize data pipelines, ETL workflows, and automation systems
• Develop and maintain data models and data services to enable efficient data access and processing
• Ensure scalability, reliability, and performance of data systems

2. Data Science

• Analyze, interpret, and visualize complex datasets to identify trends, patterns, and actionable insights
• Develop and deploy predictive models, machine learning algorithms, and data-driven solutions
• Support business and scientific decision-making through advanced analytics

3. Data Assistance & Stewardship

• Transform data into interoperable formats and enrich it with standardized metadata
• Ensure data quality through validation and collaboration with engineers and scientists
• Publish datasets and metadata in data catalogues
• Implement FAIR (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, Reusable) data principles
• Prepare and maintain Data Management Plans to support research and experimentation

4. Data Handling

• Manage secure and efficient data transfers across systems, locations, and environments
• Monitor and maintain data storage systems and data availability
• Implement and manage access control mechanisms (RBAC, ABAC)
• Track system performance using KPIs and address data storage, access, and transfer issues
• Support data operations during experimental campaigns (onshore/offshore) following SOPs

5. Cross-functional Collaboration & Best Practices

• Work in Agile/Scrum environments, participating in sprint planning, stand-ups, and retrospectives
• Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams across engineering, science, and IT
• Maintain technical documentation, processes, and knowledge repositories
• Ensure adherence to data security, governance, and compliance standards
• Promote best practices in data quality, lifecycle management, and architecture (e.g., Data Mesh)

Requirements:

• Minimum 3+ years of relevant professional experience
• Education in a relevant field
• Strong programming experience in Python or similar languages
• Experience with data processing libraries (NumPy, Pandas, SciPy, etc.)
• Hands-on experience with databases (SQL Server, PostgreSQL, Cassandra, Azure Cosmos DB, Redis, etc.)
• Experience working in Agile/Scrum environments and with collaboration tools (Azure DevOps, JIRA, GitHub, GitLab)
• Understanding of cloud platforms and data infrastructure
• Knowledge of data security and data protection practices
• Experience implementing FAIR data principles and familiarity with Data Mesh architecture
• Strong problem-solving and analytical skills
• Good level of spoken and written English
